Made sure my account wasn\’t in the store nor in the computer\’s settings, ran disk cleanup and went back to Microsoft store, was then able to download iTunes. I know why different people are reporting two different behaviors here. One group of people is saying you can get rid of the sign-in prompt just by pressing the X button, and the other group saying the sign-in prompt won\’t go away.
A – If you have never used any Microsoft account on this device, you can close the sign-in prompt without any problem. B – If you have ever used any Microsoft account on this device or used it to switch out from Windows \’S\’ Mode , Windows will keep asking you to sign-in, even for installing free apps. The solution is simple but Microsoft will not tell you this.
You need to go into your Microsoft account settings an \’remove\’ the device from there. After you\’ve done this, you will be able to install free apps from Microsoft Store without signing into your Microsoft account.
Unfortunately this doesn\’t seem to work any more. Having removed the device from the link, and restarting my laptop, the store gives me an error \”Try again later I agree with spicehead, it no longer works, I just create a new account each time I install something from the Microsoft Store.

I reinstalled Windows twice, updated, and eventually upgraded to Win11 with no success. To date, this brand new laptop is locked in Windows 11 S and leaves me unable to do the majority of my work as it requires non-organic Windows Software. It seems backwards that in order to download and install the microsoft store app, you have to have the microsoft store app?

Local and domain users, yes. But not if they have Microsoft Accounts. And not if it\’s a non-free app. I retested this with a standard user account and the app installed despite not being signed in in the store application, so I\’m going to write off what I was experiencing initially as a fluke. I still dislike the whole store concept and wish there were standard downloads available, but at least it seems like standard users can reinstall Windows 10 store apps without a problem.
I had a similar issue: If you have ever signed into a Microsoft account, and even if you remove it from the local account, Microsoft store will demand a Microsoft login for free apps from the store.

I don\’t need you to tell me it\’s impossible. I already know it\’s possible. What I need is help doing the same on my bare metal install, where I previously logged on to a Microsoft account.
Dave, it\’s still perfectly possible to do on a fresh install of Windows 10 21H2, which was just released last month. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 6 people found this reply helpful.
It is perfectly possible to do a full install of Win10 21H2, use a local account, and use the Microsoft store to download Netflix, without ever signing in to a Microsoft account. You can see the full video of me doing that in a Virtualbox VM here. The link below is just to the last. Even after installing all the latest OS updates through Windows updates inside of that VM, including all optional updates, the MS store still functions perfectly fine without a Microsoft account.
All I\’m asking is for the procedure to do the same thing, on the same release of Windows, Win10 21H2, without having to do a full install of Windows from scratch as I did in this video. This is something that I\’m sure is a possibility, but obviously some keys have to be cleaned in the registry – to eliminate previous remnants of the Microsoft account – keys that aren\’t fully cleaned up by running WSRESET.
EXE, but should be. In other words, a bug. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 14 people found this reply helpful. Dave is right. You can no longer use Store without an account, plus it must not be a work or a school account. You clearly haven\’t read the thread or watched the video I did of installing 21H2 from scratch above. No problem at all with the Microsoft Store, even with the latest OS updates. Whatever update to the store might be coming has not come to 21H2 yet.

Have you checked if that exact device is visible in account. If so, remove it and also run a Disk Cleanup in your device, before restarting and trying to take the same actions that you have already. I also saw that you got a solution in TenForums, unsure if the issue arose again or something.
